Golf Getaways In Suffolk & Essex

A Suffolk golf course green and trees

Gladwins Farm resides in an area of outstanding natural beauty, boasting rolling countryside, greenery and wildlife. This also makes the area perfect for golf courses– there are 6 within a half an hour drive of our holiday cottages suitable for every level of play. We’ll detail them all here, so that your group can golf all day, then return to our bespoke cottages in the evenings to unwind.

Located only 7 minutes away from Gladwins farm, the Stoke-by-Nayland Resort hosts two championship golf courses, Gainsborough and Constable. Both feature natural challenges, such as lakes, streams and woodland. Gainsborough’s 10th hole was voted one of the most outstanding holes in East Anglia by the PGA, notable for its dominating lake requiring two shots over water. Both courses have played host to the PGA Europro Tour, European Senior Tour PGA Seniors Championships, European Challenge Tour and the Ladies European Tour Access Series. Booking as a visitor is available online.

Please note that, unless your group numbers 8 or more, Tee times are only available to book 4 days in advance. Hosting a golf shop, reasonably priced buggy and trolley hire, a driving range and golf simulator, and the so-called ‘19th Hole’ sports bar, there’s lots to do at the Resort. With offers such as their current Winter Warmer offer, you’ll be treated to two meals around your game of golf.

Newton Green Golf Club

For a more relaxed day, suited to all ages, the Newton Green Golf Club hosts the best 18 hole village club in Suffolk, just 10 minutes from Gladwins Farm. With the choice to play 9 or 18 holes, as well as reduced green fees at off-peak and ‘twilight’ times, Newton Green has a highly flexible offering. You can book, as far in advance as convenient, on the Newton Green Golf website.

There are also buggies for hire, if booked in advance, and a winter warmer deal available which also includes a meal.

Colchester Golf Club

A great place to test your game, Colchester Golf Club was designed by 5-time open Champion James Braid, and voted the 4th best golf course in Essex. 16 minutes from Gladwins Farm, the tree lined course is available to book for all-day play or 18 holes, bookable by contacting the Pro Shop. You can also book buggies and trollies here subject to availability. Please note that the club requires evidence of a handicap to play. The site also features all-weather driving bays, a grassed practice area, warm-up nets, a practice green and bunker, as well as chipping and putting greens.

With over 70 bunkers to be aware of, as well as subtly-contoured greens and all-year-round fast greens, a challenge awaits. Find out more about Colchester Golf Club.

Brett Vale Golf Club

Home of the Tolly Cobbold cup winners, Brett Vale hosts an 18-hole course, as well as 3 par 3 holes, a putting green, 2 chipping greens and stunning countryside. Home to Golfers and a unique array of wildlife, the stunning course is located 20 minutes from Gladwins Farm. With Buggies, clubs, shoes and range balls for hire, the club is ideal for an impromptu trip as well as a planned group visit. Please note that the course, while playable all year round, is suitable for soft spikes only, and bookings should be made through the pro shop.

Hintlesham Golf Club

Ideal for the Golfer who likes to prepare, Hintlesham offers changing rooms, showers and towels, as well as pre-game practice areas including a practice range, short game area and putting green. Originally designed by course architects Hawtree & Co., before its modification by Walker Cup Captain Peter McEvoy, the front nine plays along historic gardens, whilst the last holes feature water-based challenges. All this located just 24 minutes away from Gladwins Farm.

Some describe the 4th hole as the most difficult Par 3 in Suffolk, requiring a downhill tee shot to a heavily guarded green. If you want to take up the challenge, bookings can be made through the Pro Shop.

Ipswich Golf Club

Half an hour away from Gladwins Farm, the Ipswich Golf club is home to the Purdis Heath course, consistently ranked within the top 100 Golf courses in England. Ipswich also hosts the Bixley course for which no handicap is needed, though Purdis Heath is described as a hidden gem which more golfers should know about. The estate hosts a diverse range of habitats, including heathland, acid grassland, wetland, lakes and woodland. Extensive patches of heather, acid grassland and gorse make it one of the most environmentally diverse golf courses in the area.

Push trollies, electric trollies and buggies (with medical exemption) are available to hire from the Pro Shop, through which booking is also made.
