Things To Do In Constable Country

Constable Country encompasses both Dedham Vale and Stour Valley, the landscapes of which have been immortalised by renowned early 19th Century painter John Constable.

As well as the many walks through rolling countryside and by rivers that are available for visitors to explore, reminiscent of Constable paintings, there is also a wealth of attractions suitable for all ages, abilities and interests. We have picked some of our favourite places to visit so you can visit them too!the landscapes of which have been immortalised by renowned early 19th Century painter John Constable.

Colchester

The nearby town of Colchester is famed for being the oldest recorded town, it is also very well known for fantastic shopping and of course Colchester Zoo. Castle Park is a great place to unwind after a day wandering around the town, and those who like art will enjoy a trip to the recently completed Visual Arts Facility in the town’s Cultural Quarter.

Mistley

This small town boasts beautiful countryside and a fabulous river, with boutique shops and a variety of places to find refreshments. Visitors with children should take a trip to Mistley Place Park where hundreds of rescue animals are looked after in many acres of parkland including sheep, chickens, goats and ducks as well as more rare specimens such as a red squirrel. If historic monuments are more your cup of tea, visit Mistley Towers, two fabulous examples of porticoed classical towers built in the late 18th Century.

Flatford

Here you will find an old mill, art gallery – showcasing some fabulous Constable artefacts, tea shop and the opportunity to take to the water in a rowing boat. If you don’t like the idea of exerting your self on the river, there are tour boats available in the summer season, or you can take a wander along the popular footpath next to the winding river.

Dedham

If you continue down stream from Flatford, you will end up at Dedham, where once again you enjoy time messing about on the river. There are also a few places where you can enjoy lunch or dinner, pick up an ice-cream in the warmer weather and visit shops. Dedham Art and Craft Centre is housed in a centrally located converted church and Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum is less than a mile away from the village centre.
